2009 Thu 22nd Oct Old passions merge into something new
Long ago and not so far away, I was a girl with a passion...roller skating! I loved it; the feel of the wind blowing my hair out behind me as I flew through my neighborhood, the sound of the wheels as they rolled over the ground, the feel of the vibrations as I moved one foot and then the other across the different textures like the smooth tennis courts, cracked sidewalks, rough asphalt, and the fresh pavement of the new school parking lot. On Friday nights though, I could be found at the indoor skating rink with their polished wood floors, old thin carpet over concrete, and disco ball lighting.
Fast forward to two months ago...I just moved back to the area where I grew up after a 20 year absence. One of the many benefits of this move is that I am now living in the same area code as one of my favorite women on the planet, a woman I love and admire and did I mention that she is the woman who taught me to skate? Well, one day she tells me that there is a local female roller derby league. She has been working out with them and is planning to try out during the next "Fresh Meat" session and she wants to know if I would be interested in training too? Well, what could I say except "Hell yeah"!!! So, here I am, back in the land of my childhood where I have rediscovered an old passion in a whole new way, and now, if all goes well, I'll get to put it to use being pushy, aggressive, and sometimes even downright nasty when its called for! Watch out Ladies, I'm ready to kick some roller derby butt!
